ABOUT THE ENGAGE NETWORK

The Engage Network is an innovation in social networking. We help everyday people create social change by equipping them as leaders in their communities. We develop original curricula and cutting-edge trainings to build local leadership one person, one small group, and one community at a time. In our first year, we trained more than 200 leaders and launched 35 social change circles in 7 regions.

To date, The Engage Network has partnered with three remarkable visionaries, Seane Corn, Julia Butterfly Hill, and Van Jones. Come hear about our innovative strategies for moving people from inspiration to long-term engagement.

Seane Corn

Seane Corn is a nationally celebrated yoga instructor known for her passionate, dynamic and inspirational style of teaching that incorporates both the physical and spiritual aspects of the yoga practice. Seane has been on the covers of Yoga Journal, Inner Vision and Healing, Retreat and Spa Magazine and has been featured in other magazines including Glamour, Fitness, Self and Allure, who recognize her as “one of the most sought after yoga teachers in Los Angeles.” Seane created the yoga program at Children of the Night a shelter that houses and educates adolescent prostitutes. She serves as the National Yoga Ambassador for YouthAIDS (www.youthaids.org) which raises funds, provides services and spreads national awareness surrounding this global emergency. Seane is the resident yoga expert for Dr. Caroline Myss’s web site.

Julia Butterfly Hill

Julia Butterfly Hill brought international attention to the plight of the world’s last remaining ancient forests when, in 1997, she climbed 180 feet up a 1000 year-old Redwood tree and refused to come down. Her historic 738-day protest of the environmental destruction caused by clear-cutting ancient redwoods culminated with a negotiated agreement that provided permanent protection for the tree (’Luna’) and a nearly 3 acre buffer-zone. She is author of the national best seller The Legacy of Luna and One Makes The Difference, both published by HarperSanFrancisco. For the past 7 years, Julia has toured the world giving presentations at universities, conferences, concerts and community events on each person’s power and responsibility to change the world. Today, Julia is passionate about her work as a life coach, and continues to enjoy joyful vegan cooking and making visual art.

Van Jones

Van Jones is founding president of Green For All and a senior fellow with the Center for American Progress. He is also the New York Times best selling author of The Green Collar Economy (Harper One 2008), which is endorsed by Nancy Pelosi, Tom Daschle and Al Gore. Green For All is a U.S. organization that promotes green-collar jobs and opportunities for the disadvantaged. Its mission is to build an inclusive, green economy - strong enough to resolve the ecological crisis and lift millions of people out of
poverty. A 1993 Yale Law graduate, Van is a husband and the father of two small boys. He is a tireless advocate, committed to creating “green pathways out of poverty” and greatly expanding the coalition fighting global warming.

Michelle Shocked

Michelle Shocked’s musical career was ignited by a bootleg recording made around a Kerrville Folk Festival campfire on a Sony Walkman. Released in England as The Texas Campfire Tapes without Shocked’s authority, its success abroad enticed Mercury Records to offer the newcomer a recording contract. For Mercury, Shocked recorded a trilogy of albums that stand as a captivating primer on American music. Short Sharp Shocked’s spirited folk-rock progressed into Captain Swing’s energetic jump blues, expanding to Arkansas Traveler’s travelogue of minstrel-era country. Songs like “Anchorage,” “Come a Long Way” and “On the Greener Side” earned her a grammy nomination and saw great commercial success. Shocked launched her own Mighty Sound label in 2001. A gospel-tinged debut, Deep Natural in 2002 was followed by reissues of her Mercury albums in 2003-04. In 2005, she defied convention (one of her specialties) by simultaneously releasing another trilogy: the roots-rocking “divorce album” Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell, the Disney-fied western swing set Got No Strings and the Latin/blues blast Mexican Standoff. Her most recent: ToHeavenYouRide spotlights Shocked where she’s always shone brightest—live onstage, delivering for an audience. The album captures her at her most soulful—in the original spiritual sense of the term. So continues the journey of a true American original.
